The Perth Farmhouse is a dream made reality by a couple of city escapees turned first-gen farmers

Image

In 2018, Steve and Casey Howanyk traded city life for the countryside, turning a humble egg-selling venture into something truly special. They transformed their historic 1868 barn into a modern, welcoming space and, by 2022, introduced their beloved Goat Social experience - quickly drawing visitors from near and far.

Driven by a shared passion and big dreams, the Howanyks went on to create Perth County’s first-ever winery, planting a five-acre vineyard of cold-climate grapes like Vidal and Marquette. Today, The Perth Farmhouse blends rustic charm with modern elegance, offering guests the chance to sip handcrafted wines and ciders, cuddle goats, and soak in the beauty of the farm, one unforgettable visit at a time.

The Perth Farmhouse is an agri-tourism destination offering farm-to-table experiences, curated wine & cider tastings, and immersive farm interactions. Through sustainability, local collaboration, and experiential tourism, we create unforgettable experiences, redefining how people engage with food, wine, and agriculture in a scenic rural setting.

Winemaker

Meet Steve Byfield.

Born and raised in Kitchener, Ontario, Steve’s journey into the world of wine began during his university days, when he started experimenting with winemaking as a hobby. Fascinated by wine’s cultural influence on food and drink, his inquisitive and artistic nature led him to explore the craft more deeply.

Beginning as an apprentice cellar hand, Steve’s career in wine quickly blossomed. He went on to open his own virtual winery, Nyarai Cellars, in 2009. His unwavering commitment to quality, combined with a strong focus on vineyard practices and meticulous winemaking, defines his approach.

We’re thrilled to present our first-ever wines and ciders, crafted by Steve. Here’s to an extraordinary talent and the exceptional wines he creates!

History of the farm

History of the farm

While fixing up our original barn we found a 1903 Toronto newspaper in the walls that was delivered to a David Ratz. According to the Perth County archives, Henry Eidt and David Ratz purchased the farm for $1000 in 1884. Prior to that the property was run as an Inn since 1868. In the early 1900s the Ratz familiy ran a sawmill down by the creek. The concrete footings from the mill are still beside our creek. After many owners and different farm operations such as sheep, rabbits, and hay we are happy to have put down our own roots here as first generation farmers.
